I was born in Leeds and moved to Minneapolis in the US. It snowed a lot and I never saw Prince. I played guitar in a blues band called Killing Floor before the drummer went to jail and then I had my first proper band called the Rainjackets. We released a cassette and then broke up.
I drove to Santa Fe New Mexico and lived in a village in the mountains and then proceeded to travel around America by for about 5 years by myself in an old Volvo playing over 200 concerts a year in little bars, cafes, theatres, festivals, concert halls and colleges and managed to independently record and release 3 albums on very low budgets. Some were actually played on the radio.
Disillusioned with the travelling troubadour lifestyle I moved to Portland Oregon, rented an old warehouse and in an Andy Warhol's Factory inspired delusion, built a recording studio and art space. I called it Are You Listening? and shared the space with some other artists, graphic designers and a music publicist and I engineered and produced albums for a lot of great bands including Decemberists, Man of the Year, Hindi Guns, Charmparticles, Little Sue, Nicole Campbell, Papillon, Funk Shui, Jolenes, Pete Krebs, Stephanie Schneiderman, Purusa, Aaron Masonek, Trick Sensei and I'm sure a few more. I played a few gigs and recorded my fourth album "Sweeper" with Ezra Holbrook, Aaron Masonek and Josh Boyd.
Eventually the landlord turned up the heat on this little bohemian enclave and so I packed up the car and went back to the sanctuary of the desert in New Mexico, but not before recording the beginnings of another album "Frame" with drummer Jason Bedard (King Black Acid), bassist Kelly Simmons (Man of the Year) and keyboard player James Beaton (Everclear). We called ourselves Sweeper.
I was feeling the itch to get back to Europe and George Bush got elected for a second time so I bought a plane ticket to Italy. I played a few gigs but after about 3 months I decided to live in Ireland. I set up a recording studio in a little stone cottage just outside Cork City and recorded music for Niamh Murphy, Sparkleroom, Box Camera, Arm the Elderly, The Driven, Secret Police, Dardanelles, Exit the Street, Wiggle, The Red Herrings and I'm sure a few others. I played bass in a band called The Outside for a while and also Farfisa organ and synths in Box Camera. I also played a few solo gigs.
A couple of years later, I sold my studio, loaded up the car with my instruments and went to France for a while. I got a little apartment in Lyon, became fairly reclusive and wrote a lot of new songs.
I'm doing some recording in Feb '09 at Studio Hacienda in the Beaujolais with Pierre Granjean, Christian Fradin and Jason Bedard, good friend and drummer from Portland who played on my last album and who is conveniently now living in Copenhagen.
I think I'm ready to play in the UK now!
