Peter Gabriel to be presented with award

Peter Gabriel is to be presented with the 2008 award for Amnesty International’s Ambassador of Conscience Award.

The award, which has previously been given out to Nelson Mandela and U2 amongst others, will be presented to the former Genesis singer at a ceremony in London on September 10th by U2 guitarist The Edge.

Gabriel has been a regular campaigner for human rights around the world and worked with Amnesty on the 1986 Conspiracy of Hope Tour. He is also the founder of Witness, a human rights video community campaign, and The Elders, a group of global figureheads that work to counteract the world’s major problems.

The singer, 58, collects the award in its sixth year of existence.
