How many singer-songwriters would be willing to spend their days working in a fish’n’chip shop or on a building site? And how many have played alongside hip-hop legends from the USA? From Chip shop to funk-rock – this is Nicola K.
Nicola Koussertari is not your ordinary singer-songwriter, nor is she a ‘wannabe-popstar,’ she is a performer with a passion. Born in the UK to a Cypriot family, Nicola was brought up in a quiet town in Hampshire where the closest thing to the Mediterranean is Costa Coffee. Using her songwriting and singing as an outlet for her frustrations and emotions, she has shown the drive and ability to achieve much than serving cod’n’chips by already gaining airplay and press in the UK, USA, Italy, Greece, Russia and Cyprus.
Combining her cultural routes with her love of rock and hip-hop, Nicola has evolved her own style, described by many as a ‘breath of fresh air.’ With powerful, melodic vocals combined with rocking guitars, funky bass lines and hard-hitting drums, the music is funk-rock with a beautiful twist.
She delivers a energetic live show with her own dedicated band, and together they have already played gigs and festivals all over the UK and Europe – including shows at The Half Moon and Dublin Castle in London, and recently headlining a festival to 4000 people in her native Cyprus.
Her new lead track, the heart-felt and powerful “Come Back” - written about the loss of her Grandfather – is a question and answer between them in an imaginary dialogue, whilst her song “Writing On The Wall” was prompted by a war memorial at the recent remembrance days service.
Nicola’s vocals have gone beyond the reach of rock, however. She has collaborated and performed with hip-hop producers and artists such as Scratch from the Roots, Don ES from New York, and DNA from Cyprus. She has also performed for country, dance, pop and drum and bass producers.
