'Pablo Picasso - Music Of His Time' claims to give a musical perspective, with pieces chosen to reflect the changing musical climate and highlight the pioneers in classical music at the time.
A bold statement and, in this case, one that is just too much to live up to.
The opening piece, Isaac Albeniz's 'Asturias' sounds as mysterious and brooding as classical Latin guitar does. Following this we are ushered into Igor Stravinsky's excellent, highly dramatic 'Petrushka'.
The disc soon loses its momentum though upon the arrival of the Eric Satie piece 'Parade'. However modernist the permutations may be and however much depth Satie conveys, the feeling of change and movement does seem to be lost.
Following this we have other pieces from Stravinsky and Francis Poulenc, which again fail to capture the imagination and often tend to revisit previous ideas.
It's by all accounts a good listen, but for its purpose and ideal it is, at times, uninspiring
