A crazed fan desperate to meet Sir Paul McCartney outwitted his security team after crashing his car through the entrance gates to his country estate last Friday, it has been revealed.
The as-yet-unnamed man drove his car through the entrance gate to the house - alerting McCartney's security people at Peasmarch estate, who considered the individual to be planning an assassination attempt.
After initially apprehending the man, who was screaming "I must get to him (McCartney)", he then broke their hold and set off across fields leading directly to the former Beatle's home, being stopped just meters short of the house.
A chase ensued along country lanes close to the estate, before the man gave himself up in a nearby village and was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and failing to stop.
A police spokesman said, "He was detained under the Mental Health Act and is not facing charges."
McCartney wasn't at home when the incident happened, arriving shortly afterwards.
