Black Eyed Peas clean up at U.S. awards

The Black Eyed Peas outshone the competition this week at the 2006 American Music Awards, taking home three trophies.
The hip-hop/pop act were named best rap/hip-hop group and best soul/rhythm & blues group, and won favourite rap/hip-hop album for "Monkey Business". Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kelly Clarkson, Mary J Blige and Rascal Flatts all hauled two trophies at the event, held in Los Angeles.
Despite being unable to attend, BEP's main man Will.I.Am thanked fans via video link from Costa Rica, for "keeping hip-hop progressive and pushing it forward."
The two big surprises of the night was Mariah Carey's defeat in three nominations, despite expectations of her being one of the night's big winners, and an unannounced appearance from Britney Spears, who presented Mary J. Blige with the best female R&B gong.
