Site-specific Sound Installations


Introduction to working with sound in relation to architecture, landscape, image, virtual spaces and interactive technology. The emphasis will be on practical work with acoustic and electronic techniques to create spatial soundworks. A basic knowledge of sound recording and experience of composing in digital audio are required for this course as simple computer programming within the Max/MSP/Jitter environment will be used.

Installing Sound - An Introduction

This course has similar aims but is geared to the needs of newcomers and does not require previous experience.

Justin Bennett is an artist working with sound and visual media based in the Netherlands. He is best known for his work with field recordings, which he uses to create installations, soundwalks, CD releases and live performances. He collaborates with, among others, BMB con, Grand Mal, 242.pilots, Joel Ryan, The Orgone.

Soundscapes - Recording and Composition


Explore the fascinating world of environmental sound. Awareness to the world's soundscape (comparable to landscape) and the use of environmental recording in artistic practice has blossomed in recent years. Participants will use various techniques for sound recording - both technical and theoretical, and explore the use of natural sound for musical composition and installation. famed within the academic and creative contexts of the soundscape from acoustic ecology to radio art.

Requires a basic knowledge of sound recording and experience of composing in digital audio on the computer.

Sounding Out Soundscapes

These sessions are structured to ensure newcomers are able to develop an understanding of the creative possibilities in this medium, sound basic techniques, and the confidence to pursue their creative ideas further.

Chris Watson is an internationally acclaimed sound recordist with a particular and passionate interest in recording the wildlife sounds of animals, habitats and atmospheres from around the world. As a freelance recordist for film, TV & radio, Chris Watson specialises in natural history and documentary location sound together with track assembly and sound design in postproduction. His TV work includes ' The Life of Birds' which won a BAFTA Award for Best Factual Sound, 'The Life of Mammals', and 'Big Cat Diary' for BBC TV while on radio he has presented 'Night Time is the Right Time' and 'A Swallow's Journey' for BBC Radio 4 which was a Sony Radio Award Nominee 2002. Chris has also released his recordings on the Touch record label and his CD, 'Stepping into the Dark' won an Award of Distinction at the 2000 Prix ARS Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria.
