Band tell Tourdates they are ‘well up for it’, before playing several tracks off new album.
The Maccabees played an exceptional set on the Radio 1/NME stage, minutes before telling Tourdates how much they were looking forward to the gig.
Guitarist Felix White said: ‘‘We’re well up for it. We didn’t do any festivals last year, and Leeds and Reading are two of the biggest, two of the staple gigs of the summer so we can’t wait really.”
White also gave us an inside peek at the setlist for the show: “We’re good boys, we rehearse a lot, and we’re playing an exact split between both records. We’ll be playing ‘No Kind Words’, ‘Young Lions’, ‘Can You Give It’, and ‘Love You Better’ off the new record, plus some old favourites from ‘Colour it In’” (the band’s debut album).
Amongst telling of his disappointment with his band’s clash with Maximo Park, White declared his admiration for Spinnarette who he had seen earlier on in the day. He then revealed to Tourdates that Them Crooked Vultures (Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and John Paul Jones’ new band) would be playing a secret set on the Radio 1/NME stage: “We’re going to see Dave Grohl’s band Them Crooked Vultures a bit later. They’re playing a secret set over on the NME stage before Patrick Wolf. Watching Dave Grohl play drums is unreal.”
When the London band eventually took to the stage they impressed immensely, and White was true to his word with the setlist. Opening with ‘No Kind Words’, former singles ‘Latchmere’ and ‘Toothpaste Kisses’ were sung along enthusiastically by the crowd, before ‘Love You Better’ ended the set.
Orlando Weeks, the band’s frontman, was quite between songs but did thank the huge crowd for turning up.
