Kings of Leon brought Leeds 2009 to a barnstorming finish with a set laden with a series of hits from their four albums.
Taking to the stage just after 9.30, the Followills played a ninety minute set that drew the biggest crowd of the festival, proving the band’s popularity has sky-rocketed over the last two years, since they played second-to-last on the main stage at this festival two years ago.
Kicking off with the eerie ‘Closer’, they then played ‘Crawl’ and ‘Be Somebody’, all from latest album ‘Only by the Night’. They went on to play two songs from debut album ‘Youth and Young Manhood’ – ‘Molly’s Chambers’ and ‘Red Morning Light’.
Throughout the set, Caleb Followill was in excitable mood, constantly thanking the crowd for their support the continued love they have shown the band. Referring to the band, he said: “You created this monster. You are the best fans in the world”.
The biggest singalongs were reserved for ‘Sex on Fire’ and ‘Use Somebody’, the two songs with have propelled them a band that has superstar status. Classics such as ‘The Bucket’ and ‘Four Kicks’ then created riotous scenes in the pit.
The only blotch on the night was that Followill revealed that this slot would be the bands last UK gig for some time. He stated: “This is the last show we have booked in England for a long time, so I'm going to get my buzz on. We're going to miss you guys - we'll see you next year."
