Jack Penate has called for more artists to follow his lead and alter their sound on every album they make.
Jack Penate has called for more bravery in music.
The 'Tonight's Today' singer has taken a radical change of direction on new album 'Everything Is New' and has urged other acts to follow in his footsteps and be more experimental with his sound.
He said: "There's been quite a long period in the last 10 or 15 years of acts who it seems are people who are incredible on their first album but then it doesn't seem like there's much of a change, and I find that quite sad really, just for our state of music.
"I suppose I wanted to do the opposite, I wanted to be someone who, and I think I will be, someone who gets better with each record, so I'm feeling pretty positive that I seem to have, hopefully, pulled it off."
Jack - whose 2007 debut album 'Matinee' was panned by critics - says he hopes people will be pleasantly surprised by his latest efforts.
He added to BBC Newsbeat: "There's something that I felt I wanted to do on this record, which was hopefully surprise people but do it naturally.
"I wanted to do something which felt natural to me but was a surprise - quite a fine line to walk on when you're doing that, that's why it took quite a long time to do the record."
