Paul Conroy To Leave Virgin Records
Paul Conroy, president of Virgin Records UK, is leaving the company.
Paul Conroy, president of Virgin Records UK, is leaving the company.

During Conroy's 10 year-tenure, Virgin Records has been one of the most successful music companies in the UK, doubling its market share during the 1990s. After they signed to Virgin in 1995, Conroy oversaw the launch of what would turn out to be the UK's most successful band in nearly 30 years - the Spice Girls - selling over 34 million albums worldwide.

Other successes on Virgin's diverse roster over the last decade have included UK-signed artists such as The Verve, Massive Attack, George Michael, Chemical Brothers, Atomic Kitten, Blue, Richard Ashcroft, Embrace, Gomez and Placebo and US artists including Aaliyah, Lenny Kravitz and Janet Jackson. The company also has one of the UK's most successful compilation businesses.

Virgin Records UK has three main record labels: Hut Records which is overseen by managing director David Boyd, Innocent Records run by managing director Hugh Goldsmith, and the Virgin label under VP A&R/GM UK repertoire Philippe Ascoli. These three executives will now report to Tony Wadsworth, chairman and CEO of EMI Recorded Music UK and Ireland.

Alain Levy, chairman and CEO of EMI Recorded Music said: "Paul has had a great career at Virgin. He has made an enormous contribution, both to the company and to the record industry."

Conroy joined Virgin Records UK as managing director in 1992 and was promoted to president in 1997. He had previously been the president of Chrysalis Records International from 1990 to 1992. Between 1985 and 1990 he was first marketing director and then managing director of the US labels division of WEA Records in London. Conroy moved to WEA from Stiff Records which he joined in 1979, later becoming the label's general manager. He started his career in the music industry while still at college where he was social secretary.

Conroy served as chairman of the Brit Awards committee from 1997 to 2000, is one of the BPI Council's longest standing members, and is the current chairman of the BPI PR committee.
