Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan is better known for his intensely introspective lyrics and vocal falsetto, but with his long-running side project Puscifer finally looking to release some material, he reveals plans for an all-new direction.
"This is absolutely just put-it-on-and-move-your-butt -and-get-completely-out-of-your-head music," Keenan reveals this week to MTV News. "This is purely body candy. It's meant to make you feel like I feel when I hear James Brown, when I hear some old Jackson 5 or or Aretha. It's just that good feeling — music that makes you feel good.
Tools music has been described as math metal, mixing heavy, crunching riffs with progressive, intricate time signatures. Even the lyrics are said to resemble notable numeric structures. However, Keenan adds he's looking forward to taking a break from such intense songwriting regimes with Pulcifer, which features Danny Lohner, Primus' Tim Alexander, model Milla Jovovich and Tool guitar tech Matt Mitchell, amongst others.
"There's no math. Nothing wrong with math, but sometimes, it can be exhausting to be that forced, that focused. I'm a big King Crimson fan, but only when I have the energy to be. Sometimes I just want to hear Gnarls Barkley."
Recent Tool concerts have seen fliers with a date of Friday October 13 touted as a possible release for their album.
