Third album from the Fence Collective musician, produced by the former Talk Talk bass player: Paul 'Rustin Man' Webb
Gently supported by concertina, woodwind and double bass, Yorkston - with the help of Paul Webb - has produced a subtle, simple autumnal album which at first listen doesn't sound particularly special, rather they creep on you with their warm, wry lyrics and simple musical arrangements. Recorded over a year, Yorkston has captured his thoughts and feeling and bought together a frank, honest album of sparse fragility.
Many of the tracks deal with the subject of early hour confessions, most notably the album standout "5AM", with its fantastic swirling concertina background and the almost Arab Strap-like "Woozy with Cider". The slow opener "Summer Song" is a lilting, beautifully arranged piece highlighting the frail vocals and deep reflective melodies, and this mood carries on throughout, predictable but consistent save the dragged out "Don't Let me Down".
Not a radical difference from his previous offerings, at time it can sound a little contrived and too confident, but overall this warm collection of songs is pretty impressive.
