'Guero' is the latest in an extensive series of albums from LA troubadour Beck Hansen. It seems a long time now since Beck's mid-nineties major label debut 'Mellow Gold', and the passage of years has seen the solo artist span an equally broad spectrum of styles - most recently a foray into stripped-down acoustics on 2002's 'Sea Change'.
To the casual indie fan, Beck has rarely, if ever, surpassed the brilliant stoner funk of 'Loser', the single which broke him over a decade ago. But to say this would be to do him a gross injustice. Beck is a musical chameleon, and one of those precious rarities in today's music scene - an eclectic artist who ignores whatever trends and genres currently prevail -- making music purely to please himself.
