Dead Man Shoes is the new film by Shane Meadows (Once Upon A Time in the Midlands), currently receiving plenty of critical acclaim.
Featuring Paddy Considine (Last Resort, 24 Hours Party People) it portrays a dark tale of revenge in the backdrop of rural life, a settlement near the Peak District. For the film, Shane Meadows has personally picked a remarkably eclectic and interesting collection of artists to highlight the ambience and experimental nature of the action on screen.
The atmosphere of the tracks are, on the whole, very sombre and reflective. Opening the compilation is one of the highlights from Smog's recent album “Supper”. 'Vessels in Vain' is perhaps one of the most gruff tracks on the compilation, however musically it is incredibly beautiful. This is followed by a trio of Calexico tracks, proving a point of mysticism; the sparse sound captures the ruggedness of the Western feel on the movie.
This is split up by a sombre offering from Adem, followed by an electronic 'Forgotten Thoughts' by Laurent Garnier running alongside the film's 'Acid' scene.
The track that is perhaps the most striking is Warp's own Gravenhurst, offering up the incredibly gorgeous “The Diver.
Elsewhere mature songwriting by Clayhill and Richard Hawley highlight the cult status that this compilation is likely to achieve. I only hope that the film complements the strength of the soundtrack.
