Permission To land', an aptly named title if ever there was one. Clinging gamely to the outer shell of the music industry for the last two years and hyped by much of the left field press, (although, with hands held high honestly, not by us) The Darkness were thought too OTT, not trendy enough and certainly not a viable business proposition by the music industry. But times change and Permission to land has indeed landed - with the force of a lycra star jump.
'Growing On Me' and 'I believe In A Thing Called Love' are, as you may have heard, are slices of forgotten early 80's-inspired stadium rock. But 'Permission To Land' is the story of the hardy Magpie, collecting together all the bright, glittering treasures he could find. When the work was over, a further job remained - to tell the world of his possessions. Hence... the record does seem at times like a sentimental masterpiece, a journey back through the last three decades, stopping at remote and distant locations.
In reality 'Permission To Land' is a long, long way from being an original piece of work. But it's a brilliant, fun, shiny LP put together by a group that clearly don't take life too seriously and deserve at least a little success on merit. We'll give them that, and nothing more.
