Marvel Biography 2009
Since forming in 2006, Marvel has had an incredible time giving kids a far more violent disco than school could ever legally provide. Here, the conviction of Refused, there, the play-till-you-pass-out energy of At The Drive-in and everywhere a tongue-in-cheek attitude towards causing havoc and having fun.
Abrasive guitars vie with dirty Justice-esque synths as songs pump full-pelt through dance-heavy interludes propelled skyward by choral vocals only to smash headlong into jackhammer hardcore breakdowns. Marvel’s music is refreshingly unpredictable. As soon as you’ve tied the laces of your new dancing shoes, they’re scuffed to hell together with your chin and elbows by the sudden carnage of the moshpit.
Playing religiously across their 9 by 5 Island home, the boys quickly rose to prominence in the local scene, the heights of which being their consecutive headline slots for local acts at Jerseylive Festival in both 2006 and 2007 (Nominee at the UK Festival Awards for "Best Small Festival") sharing the stage with The Fratellis, Kasabian, Snow Patrol The Enemy, Does it Offend You Yeah? and ¡Forward Russia! This year the boys will play Jerseylive for a third time, playing two sets across the weekend – the first headlining the Cream Tease tent on Saturday night and the second on the Sunday mainstage with Casio Kids, Basement Jaxx, Jack Penate, Doves and The Kooks.
In 2007, the boys recorded and released their debut EP ’marvel at this fiasco’ an exciting snapshot of a fledgling band bursting with ideas, taut musicality delivered with fervent immediacy. This summer the boys are set to record with Jason Wilcock, the man responsible for Reuben and The Ghost of A Thousand’s 5K debut records. Marvel’s new material promises to be bigger, heavier and dancier than anything they’ve done before. The first single from the sessions will follow in September.
These last few years, Marvel have brought their party to England with shows in London, Oxford, Manchester and Liverpool over 2008 and 2009. After a month of solid gigging over April, they finished the month in style by tearing apart the World’s End Stage at Camden Crawl 2009. Since those shows the band have been the object of an exciting building industry buzz. Radio 1, Kerrang! And NME radio all backed the bands debut single ‘Guilty Party’ which, made Steve Lamacq’s top records of the year and prestigious promoters Club Fandango have regularly put on the band at their London nights.
The boys will play select dates over the July and August period including an appearance at Watford’s premiere festival Parmstock and then will launch into a September tour to coincide with the release of their second single. Dates are set to span across England (with a stop off in Wales for good measure). With their impassioned and brutal live show, great homemade t-shirts, and an awesome single and video all on the way, things have never been more exciting for the band.
Check them out! You will not be disappointed.
