Veteran Mancs Homelife return with a solemn ode to folk. The duo, who have amassed a slew of home recordings and various exercises in DIY since forming in 1997, have essentially filtered the best bits of their sound here, resulting in a ten song set that does their aesthetic goals justice.
Beginning and ending in a languid state, the songs ebb and flow through acoustic timbres, light, fluffy instrumentation and lazy vocals, akin to Herman Dune or the softer side of Beck, especially in opener and strum-led ‘Circles’ and darker, longer and odder closer, ‘More Wine’. And such is the case through much of the record. This isn’t a bouyant listen, but it is influenced by the more introspective moments encircling happiness, and what makes it so fleeting when relationship crumble.
More of a soundtrack for the sublime moments in summer, it showcases a duo bursting with talent, ready to take their DIY experiment out into the mainstream.
