Some British bands make it nigh on impossible for reviewers to avoid Britpop comparisons. Enter North London’s ‘finest’ the Holloways. There is nothing even slightly original about this album. Yes, ‘On The Bus’ is cheeky chappy fun in the Grand British Tradition of The Small Faces and Blur.
To be fair, ‘Jukebox Sunshine’ shows the band haven’t lost their vocal dexterity, with cracking harmonies that are well-aligned. But the Boo Radleys were doing it 15 years ago. And not only that, but they are even ripping themselves off. ‘Public Service Broadcast’ is their hit ‘Generator’ repackaged for a new album. Should you ever hear it, try not singing along. In fact, don’t bother. Just trust me. You can’t. The album’s not bad, just very unremarkable.
The trend for bouncy British indie-pop has waned over the last few years, but the Holloways are trying to buck that trend. They have just recruited a new guitarist and drummer. I hope you left your old bands on good terms gents...
