Jakaboski delivers sensitive and straight-talking spoken word over some deep jazz grooves. And despite occasionally descending into self-indulgent or overly sincere jazz noodeling, this was a thoroughly lovely affair.
Jack Aboski’s bold, responsive delivery and clever, honest lyrics created subtle and compelling drama. As a performer he is enigmatically seductive: with a quietly powerful confidence and presence, he presents thoughts, conversations and narratives that captivate and charm. The backdrop comprised gorgeously chilled-out, warm tunes with sumptuous, even virtuosic, execution, to the point that one danger would be ending up too gorgeous. It could get a bit chocolatey without some edge. This act sound like a perfect end to a lazy Sunday.
Stoke Newington’s The Others makes a first impression somewhere between ex-squat, living room and youth club, all sofas, makeshift bar and fairly decent sound. Refreshingly, this night did really focus on the music, culminating in a jam with musicians from ethically hip-hopping Fur, funky favourites Something Simple, and much audience-participation. Enjoy similar jazz-infused hip-hop happenings every first Sunday of the month.
