Live Review - !!!
Electric Ballroom 7 July 2009

by Emily Wither, first published in LondonTourdates #051 ,17th July 2009

Dance punk ensemble !!! are indeed Pow Pow Pow from first beat to last. They may have fallen off the radar for the last year or so, but they’ve still got it.

It’s all rather ravey for a rainy Tuesday night, as the crowd immediately gets down to some serious ass shaking, orchestrated by the pioneering movers and shakers from the early noughties.  The Brooklyn lads gallop through a set of sexy synth, gravelly bass and twisted funk. They take the rather risky step of showcasing a selection of new tracks, and all credit to them, as these are devoured with the same enthusiasm as the old favourites ‘Louden Up Now’ and ‘Myth Takes.’

Charismatic vocalist, Nic Offer, teases the crowd with his trademark sensual moves.  He dangles himself off the edge of the stage through the first few numbers before deciding everyone is fully is warmed-up and launching himself right into the gaggle.

He makes it his mission to personally assess whether everyone in the crowd is busting moves up to his standard but, on this occassion, no-one dares steps up to the plate as fans scramble to avoid his grasp. A circle forms around him on the dance-floor and he decides to cool off by drenching himself with an innocent bystander’s beer.

Any hopes of an encore are dashed when the lights flicker on and a collective groan escapes from a blinking, confused mob. It’s only Tuesday and there is another three days of work before the weekend. Damn.
