Ali Campbell is without doubt a music legend. The Ivor Novello-winner has a miriad of achievements to his name, but must of us British-born twenty-somethings credit him for providing a song or three to the soundtrack of our youths.
Flying High, like most of his catalogue, is the kind of album that both your friends and your parents could jam to. His first solo release since splitting with legendary reggae act UB40, it’s full off feel-good grooves, sunshine anthems and occasional reflections on deeper issues. Contributions come from international artists such as Lady Saw, German reggae artist Gentleman, the South African Danny K, the Soweto Gospel choir and UK artists Craig David and Sway. Some effective covers include a groovy rendition of the Tom Jones’s ‘She’s A Lady’, and a take on Britney Spears' ‘Out From Under’, a cathartic exploration of his departure from UB40. A cracking summer album from a consistently wonderful artist.
