With two weekly Kiss FM shows and a residency at the Ministry of Sound, Shortee Blitz has become the go-to-guy for live hip-hop in the UK. He is a multiple MOBO award nominee and winner for Best Club DJ and Best Radio DJ, as well as being a Sony Award winner. He tells ltd that the best gig he’s ever been to was for only thirty people, and demands a supersize supergroup.

Favourite album ever and why?
There are too many albums I love. For example, Big Daddy Kane’s Long Live The Kane and It’s a Big Daddy Thing, Nas’s Illmatic, Raekwon’s Only Built For Cuban Linx... That’s only a few of my favourites, mainly because of the perfect mix of lyricism, beats and most importantly vibe and the mood good music puts you in.
What song would be played at your funeral?
Haven’t thought about that yet, but jumping out at me right now: Earth Wind and Fire’s ‘Brazilian Rhyme’ simply for the fact it’s a beautiful piece of music. Or Take 6’s ‘Spread Love’ which is self explanatory.
What’s your earliest music memory?
My uncles were musicians and their musical tastes were varied and the amount of music they had in their possession was great for me as a kid coming up. Anything from Cameo, The Jam, The Specials [Shortee namechecks a million artists] kind of shaped my taste, and especially my thirst for all things hip-hop.
Is there any particular song you never want to hear again in your life?
In my job there are too many, but Akon springs to mind.
Who’s in your fantasy group?
Biggie, Kane, Big L, James Brown, J Dilla, Jam Master Jay, Elzhi, Black Thought, Peedi Crakk, Beanie Sigel, Jay-Z, Nas, Ryan Leslie, Pharrell, Nottz, Harry Love, Common, Busta - to name a few. Big-arse group!
Best gig you’ve ever seen?
I’ve been fortunate to see and be a part of some phenomenal shows during my career. From touring with Wu Tang Clan the first time they came to U.K and touring with Cypress Hill back in the day to Beatboxing for Dre and Snoop at Brixton Academy. DJing for Rock Steady Crew at fresh 98. DJing For TY. Seeing Black Moon and the whole Boot Camp Click along with Roger Troutman (R.I.P.) and Zapp who played at Alexandra Palace, which holds seven thousand people, but only had thirty people in the building! But they all performed like it was a capacity crowd.
What’s the thing you like most about music in 2009?
The thing I like the most right now, is that musicians now hold all the cards and can be as creative and steer their careers wherever their drive and networking takes them. The internet has left the need to be signed to a major record label to a minimum, when they had artists at a disadvantage creatively and monetarily.
What’s the thing you like least about music in 2009?
What I just said is a double edge sword, as there’s a lot of people who have no business making music, so the world is filled with people with that drive, and know how to manipulate the internet, but don’t have a talented bone in their bodies.
Biggie or Pac?
Biggie all the way, much more of an accomplished emcee; wordplay, flows, never took himself too seriously, and is to some, arguably the best to ever do it. People say that about 2pac too, but Biggie convinced people with only two albums.
