Album Review - Beastellabeast: Beastiality
Ahnrefn/Lovehowlmuse

by Chris Purnell, first published in LondonTourdates #049 ,19th June 2009

Beastiality is what you would get if you fused Sonic Youth with Katy Perry – and if you are worried by such a comparison, don’t be - this works. With a mix of sleazy rock attitude and electro sensibilities, Beatrice Beast and Stella Nova’s short (thirty-two minutes) album deserves a fair amount of praise.

On first track ‘Clean of the Dirty,’ Bea throws together yelping vocals, shrieks and girlish whispers with some fairly creative pop appeal. ‘Death and the Devil’ overlays an L7-esque bass line, fuzzy power chords and gravelly vocals, while ‘Final Mistake’ floats between melodic Indie rock, catchy 80’s revival and electronic hip-hop. The only chink in the armour comes with the unmelodic ‘Rock it Hard,’ which is dreadful but forgivable, as it doesn’t last all that long.

Beastellabeast are drawing on a tradition of jump-around dancey pop music that extends from the Talking Heads to the Go! Team. The big news though, isn’t Beastellabeast’s storied sound - it’s just how good it really is.
