Like any musical innovators, The Clash created a brand of punk rock that many a band – including Electric River – have attempted to emulate.
Whether this is reverential torch bearing or copycat posing is debatable, but a spot at The Specials after-show party last month adds a credible notch to Electric River’s bedpost, and if you like your rock with a 70’s UK-punk kick, they are worth checking out. Radio No Go! is the full length debut from this UK-based quartet, and it ticks all the right boxes, with gravel-heavy, UK-accented vocals and the obligatory socialist perspective.
Like Gallow’s recent project Grey Britain, Radio No Go! draws heavily on Britain’s cultural landscape and identity, from union strikes and morning cigarettes in ‘On Another Day’ and working man troubles in ‘Rolling Past Your Guard’ to class boundaries on ‘Never Escape’. But despite the bleakness, there is a bounce and resilience to their tight feel-good rhythms.
