As soon as they burst through the Barfly’s modest side entrance in their red tracksuits and rock star shades, thrusting forward headless guitars in a statement of cool intent, you knew the five-piece Datarock were going to treat Camden to the full splendor of their Norwegian party powers.
Gig opener ‘Give It Up’ wasted no time in establishing the party vibe with its full-on funk guitars and massive backing chant, putting broad smiles on the faces of those lucky enough to have tickets to this sold out event.
The band’s Talking Heads tribute ‘True Stories’, whose lyrics consist entirely of Talking Heads song titles, kept up the pace until things reach an early peak with a truly revved up version of 2005 dancefloor anthem ‘Fa Fa Fa’, complete with singsong audience participation.
Picking out highlights isn’t easy, though the audience prize would have gone to the call-and-response entertainment of ‘Computer Camp Love’, probably the most anticipated track of the night. Datarock detractors would call them a novelty act, but when poppy throwaway funk-electro-disco rock is as so darn likeable as this, you’d have to be soulless not to enjoy the experience.
