For the Austin art-rock band, tonight was all about showcasing their triumphant The Century Of Self album.
The complex punky snarls of ‘Iris Unveiled’ and the heavy, drugged-up psych-rock of ‘The Far Pavilion’ swirled around the Ballroom. Fan favourites like ‘A Perfect Teenhood’ got their inevitable airings, adding punchy keys and visceral angst to the set.
The colossal, if slightly earnest performance was matched by the sweat, spilled beer and growls of the pretty intense crowd. All of this – the show, the crowd, the twisted noises - made a perfect match for the Ballroom’s sepulchural architecture.
The band is now six albums in, and looking rather paunchy in their middle age. Not that the trail of dead we know them by cared in least…
