Album Review - We Were Promised Jetpacks: These Four Walls
Fat Cat

by Jake Bickerton, first published in LondonTourdates #046 ,8th May 2009

Now that Glasvegas have given the green light once more for strong Scottish accents in pop, We Were Promised Jetpacks fire ahead with a prototype shoegazing-lite version of said band.

Album opener ‘It’s Thunder and it’s Lightning’ is promisingly energetic and reasonably melodic, but this early promise soon fizzles out and the album quickly begins to try the patience.

The main problem here seems to be a lack of quality control in the song writing. It’s easy to imagine the Jetpacks getting away with the weaker compositional moments on These Four Walls while playing live, with guitars amped up to eleven.

But in the cold light of day only the likes of recent single ‘Quiet Little Voices’ and the slightly scary ‘This Is My House, This Is My House’ – sample lyric “There’s something happened in the attic, there’s no way I am going up there.” – make any sort of lasting impression.
