Summer of Hate is a blazing, dextrous debut from this duo, fresh signings to Fat Possum. The frequent comparisons to Jesus And Mary Chain that the band earn are more then warranted, especially on standout track ‘I Wanna Kill’ which channels the Reid brothers with a vengeance.
Earlier single ‘Neon Jesus’ was chiefly responsible for earning them online buzz, although it’s strangely absent from this full length effort. Fuzzed up waves of reverb-heavy chords and a penchant for distortion prevail, whilst their rhythms are choppy enough to maintain an air of indie-punk bravado, shot through with a narcotic glare. ‘Flash Of Light’ thunders gloriously along with its sleazy, thudding bass and dirty tremolo lick.
‘Sleeping With The Lord’ and the album’s title track echo with touches of Suicide and The Pixies in their Trompe Le Monde era. The San Diego-based band can claim a win with this one.
