Wavves is the moniker for Californian Nathan Daniel William, signed to US heavyweight label Fat Possum Records with Fiery Furnaces and 90s legends Dinosaur Jnr.
It will come as no surprise, therefore, that his debut is ear splitting, organised, sonic mess, abrasive and sweet. You’ll find hypnotising riffs, tight hooks and narcotic, pop-kissed choruses within the copious fuzz and distorted vocals.
Recorded on a four-track, the album oscillates between accessible (current single ‘So Bored’) and experimental (‘Killr Punx, Scary Demons’), with surf, punk and grunge giving way to elements of new wave and hybrid stoner-tinged constructs.
Wavves is a rolling collection of clever noise – raw, curious and sharp, yet undeniably rhythmic and intuitive. Citing Sonic Youth, The Ramones, The Pixies and The Shaggs as influences, it’s clear that Williams has drawn on a host of innovative styles to create his own unique breed. A ridiculously amazing record.
