When a band cites sock monkeys, Brian Wilson and the movies of Akira Kurosawa as some of their influences, there’s a chance that their music is going to be, well, a little left-of-centre.
When that band is London duo Oh, Atoms, that’s an apt description. In the surroundings of Soho Revue Bar’s lush leather couches, mood lighting, and stripper poles, Oh, Atoms’ quirky, melodic pop tunes play out beautifully to the surprisingly large audience.
With enough conversation between songs to keep banter enthusiasts more than happy, it’s clear that Oh, Atoms don’t take themselves too seriously, although with aural memories of The Go-Betweens playing amongst tunes like the hook-laden ‘Transcontinental’ and darling single ‘Sugar Mouse’ (before which singer Gwen invited crowd members up to the stage to receive said treats), they are clearly a pair with a long and fun future in front of them. It wraps up all too quickly though, the band keeping the set brisk at 45 minutes. But wandering outside shortly after 10pm, it’s hard not to feel just that little bit warmer on the inside.
