While Glasgow certainly has a rich musical heritage, it is perhaps surprising to find out Remember Remember hail from Scotland’s largest city.
Instead the intricate, often beautiful, instrumental soundscapes that make up the band’s self-titled debut album immediately bring to mind the weird and magical compositions of Scandinavian acts such as Sigur Ros and Efterklang. Led by Graeme Ronald, the talented six-piece mix conventional instruments like the piano, sax and flute with everyday objects such as, bubblewrap, a hole punch and a rubber shark. From this comes lengthy pieces including the pulsating, Caribbean-tinged ‘The Dancing’ and the slow-burning ‘Imagining Things (i)’, the latter being the first part of the epic 30-minute suite that closes the album.
Ignoring the current fashion for focusing on the minutiae of everyday (Lilly Allen, The Arctic Monkeys etc) Remember Remember paint lush, broad strokes on a huge canvas.
