Nothing gets people on your side like taking all your pent up angst and making a record about it in your bedroom.
However, the most remarkable thing about Lizzyspit’s album is its unremarkability. Writing about post-romantic stress disorder isn’t new for singer/songwriters like KT Tunstall and Alanis Morissette, but Eggbox doesn’t rage like ‘You Oughta Know’ - it sounds more like grief.
On ‘Not After This’ the stripped down production alternates between haunting vocals and a monotonous guitar rhythm for an oddly stirring Enya-meets-David Gray opener. ‘I Don’t Need a Drummer’ uses a bluegrass bass line, which sadly does not distract from clichéd Lizzyspit grammaticisms: “You can be who you like, you can be anyone.”
Lizzyspit is at her best on simple ballads like ‘Rollercoaster’ - a weepie about not wanting to be alone - and the emotionally raw ‘Laura’s Diary’, where she laments: “I need a drink to try and forget you.” Lizzyspit’s songs may sound like vintage Bryan Adams, but Eggbox is a heartfelt record.
