Live review - Ladytron
Shepherd’s Bush Empire 21 November 2008

by Dylan Stewart, first published in LondonTourdates #036 ,28th November 2008

It’s a typically fresh November evening in Shepherd’s Bush, and as the crowd grabs a drink before Liverpudlians Ladytron come on stage, alongside the excitement there’s a sense of relief that the cold weather is staying outside.

But when the six-piece take to the stage at nine o’ clock sharp, all other thoughts drift away, punters attentive to only those on stage. Unfortunately the sound quality is dreadful, to the point that hearing vocalists Helen Marnie and Mira Aroyo above the distorted keyboards becomes nigh on impossible.

Ladytron make simple songs, which are at times a little boring, although their lighting is spot on, and when the strobes come out to play during tracks like ‘Season of Your Illusions’ and 2002 hit ‘Seventeen’, the ante is undeniably upped. The band finally move around the stage, although given this is only during their final song, it’s all a little too late. After a quick freshen up backstage, Ladytron grant their audience another couple of tunes, finishing with the undeniably climactic ‘Destroy Everything You Touch’.

The crowd love it, and the song almost makes up for what has otherwise been a lacklustre show, but doesn’t quite succeed. Disappointing, and short.
