With each new release Waldeck don’t reinvent the wheel so much as rotate the tyres. None of their albums including Ballroom Stories, are dramatically different from one another – they’re all sets of smooth vocals and down-tempo atmospherics.
That said, the slowly blooming ‘Make My Day’, wherein a dreamy melody hatches from an array of ingredients which reads like some techno geek’s record collection, is evidence of Waldeck increasingly drawn to lush tunes rather than mere poppy techno. Likewise, ‘Memories’, lit up by a shimmering double helix of piano and vocals, is twisted easy listening that is more strangely beautiful than the 90s work of Bjork.
It’s not that Ballroom Stories doesn’t have its flaws - it does - but these seem miniscule compared to the more striking moments such as the icy, phased vocal gusts of ‘Midsummer Night’s Blues’ among the roar of clarinets and sequencers. Some more up-tempos would have been nice, but Ballroom Stories still makes for good post-party chill-out music.
