Album review - Los Campesinos!: We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed
Wichita

by Charlotte Richardson Andrews, first published in LondonTourdates #034 ,31st October 2008

This sophomore effort, released just five months after their full length debut, is a colourful explosion of indie/pop noise, delivered with an endearing, relentless energy.

Releasing two albums in one year is an unusual manoeuvre, but judging by the pace of their frenetic rhythms, Los Campesinos! (‘the farmers’ or ‘peasants’ in Spanish) are a band bursting with musical energy. Currently on their Shred Yr Face tour, this Cardiff seven piece are a boy/girl mix which formed in 2006, and managed to secured a support slot with Broken Social Scene the same year.

We Are Beautiful... is a mesmerising blend of accessible, frolicking indie, spliced with moments of experimental, static-driven electro currents. Boasting a busy musical arsenal including guitars, drums, keyboards, violins, glockenspiels and melody horns, it would be easy to spoil the broth and end up with a clashing, over-busy mess; but Los Campesinos! have created beautiful, cohesive numbers.
