In recent months the Royal Albert Hall has been hosting hush, a series of gigs in the ‘intimate’ setting – by which I mean, regal and grandiose compared with everywhere but the main hall – of the Elgar Room.
One wonders at the wisdom of showcasing new talent in such a lavish space, the plush curtains, wooden panelling and chandeliers seeming to dampen any attempt at generating a decent buzz. It certainly wasn’t due to lack of effort on the performer’s part, hip-hop lad DELS doing his bit to get things moving – and not getting very far.
thecocknbullkid, known to her parents as Anita Blay, enjoyed more success, her electro-synth pop going down a treat. Backed by a trio of blokes on guitar/bass/drums, Ms Blay glowed, her spirited vocals sailing into the expansive acoustics (which were great – that’s the rub). Debut single ‘On My Own’ was fantastic, as was the dance-floor ready ‘I’m Not Sorry’.
Hell, the whole set was stellar – which made it all the more criminal when she finished bang on the dot of ten. One can only look forward to seeing her again in more conducive surrounds.
