Live review - The Little Ones
93 Feet East23 September

by Barnaby Smith , first published in LondonTourdates #032 ,3rd October 2008

Pretty much without fail, The Little Ones write songs that are chirpy, catchy, and dare I say it, though they won’t thank me, jaunty. Californian pop at its modern best, a smile ne’er left the faces of the five musicians bouncing around 93 Feet East tonight.

Their album Morning Tide, while lacking a certain depth is an uplifting listen. Tonight they render Morning Tide tracks with admirable precision and unfaltering faithfulness to the studio versions, which usually I would scoff at, but in the case of The Little Ones, it works. A relatively straightforward band channelling a single feeling (celebration, and happiness) there is no need to deviate from the formula that is proving so much fun for both band and audience – although a (very) brief improvised dalliance with Sisqo’s ‘Thong Song’ provokes singer Edward Reyes into mild hysterics.

All is forgiven though when they launch into what is easily their finest song, ‘Everybody’s Up To Something’, which with its different sections and interweaving melodic lines is as close as The Little Ones come to an ‘opus’. Otherwise, it’s all good, clean, simple, fun.
