As long as you draw the line at The Eagles, Californian 70s rock is, come on, no bad era to base a career on.
David Vandervelde is something of a 21st century Jackson Browne, complete with the tender years, the endearingly shaggy hair and easy production. Despite some understandable lyrical immaturity in places, this is a most beautiful second album from the young man.
While the influences are abundantly clear and need not be laboured over, Vandervelde is a songwriter of some shimmering talent. With a flick of his mane he pores over relationships and the simple romance of ‘hitting the road’, with the innocent spirit of a wide-eyed troubadour in love with music and the world.
Christ, let’s not go overboard. But in ‘Old Turns’, ‘Cryin’ Like The Rain’, ‘Need For Now’ and the title track Vandervelde has crafted songs that easily stand-up to anything the 70s AOR parade he venerates so much can offer, and that, friends and strangers, is certainly saying something.
