After the abject misery of the Camden Crawl, spending hours queuing in the rain to spend about five minutes seeing bands, it seemed a very sensible idea to hold a festival over several nights in one venue. Fistful of Fandango have the right idea, showing 30 bands over five nights at the 229 Club.
Wednesday saw shouty, electro-girl duo Robots in Disguise headline, fronted by Dee Plume and Sue Denim (pseudonym), playing tracks from their third album We’re in the Music Biz. Unfortunately, their catchy call and response vocals were wasted on a quiet room with a school disco ambience. And although they gave their all, even getting down and reaching out to the crowd, it seemed as though they weren’t as young as they used to be, though Dee Plume had the word ‘Robot’ in sequins across her bum, which was nice.
The other acts were generally disappointing. Despite high hopes for Steve Mason of the Beta Band as Black Affair, the repetitive electro pop was painfully boring to watch (Mason on vocals in pitch darkness with a bloke standing behind him with a laptop). Kid Carpet was a cross between Chas and Dave and a children’s party entertainer –surreal, inventive but not something you’d actually like to listen to.
Best of the rest were electro-collective Slagsmålsklubben from Sweden. The six of them twiddled knobs and pressed buttons with gusto to produce a banging electro sound - a little too Euro-dancey at times, but thoroughly enjoyable and had an otherwise sedated crowd losing themselves, just a little bit.
