Live Review - Diamond Drive
The Underworld29 August

by Debs McCaffrey, first published in LondonTourdates #031 ,19th September 2008

Without any expectations for this Wild Plum night of new bands, I found myself jumping around to one of the best live performances I have seen so far this year.

After a couple of acts that didn’t make their presence felt nearly so much, Denmark’s Diamond Drive injected dollops of energy into the room with a brilliant set that bulged with powerful heavy rock/metal stonkers.

Their frontman Jens couldn’t stand still as his head and feline body shook for most of their forty-minute set, and with a virtuoso bass player and guitarist, this four-piece tore into the night with their rousing songs.

Two in particular stood out: the first, ‘Infidels’ I woke up singing the next morning and ‘Maggot’ is a throbbing invasive number to make the skin prickle.

Diamond Drive, it should go without saying, got most of the Underworld jumping with their energetic yet melodic set, powered by a talented and agile singer with the presence to hold us in his thrall. Cheered back on for an encore, the Drive exploded for one last time whetting the appetite even more for when they come back over again in November.
