Live Review - The King Blues
Koko 5 September

by Joe Tyler, first published in LondonTourdates #031 ,19th September 2008

There should be more bands like The King Blues. Whilst much mundane indie ambles along failing to say anything significant, the Hackney six-piece fuse major political issues with ska-tinged punk, and showcased it in a stirring live show at Koko.

“This song is raging against the BNP,” frontman Itch proclaims at one point, in one of many protesting statements of their 30-minute set.

But it’s not all about serious propaganda – current single ‘My Boulder’ creates jubilant camaraderie amongst the crowd who bellow out the shared vocal chorus. Whilst ‘Lets Hang The Landlord’, which sees Itch pick along with his ukulele, is classic pop-punk that provides the perfect complement to the band’s colourfully confident image.

For the entirety of the show, the music is forcefully inspiring. The delightful reggae of ‘Mr Music Man’ is reminiscent of The Specials – compellingly joyful but with a rousing street-level undertone.

Never dull and thoroughly thrilling throughout, The King Blues should be watched closely. Rarely do bands combine extremely catchy, radio friendly music with strong activist messages that today’s youth should be aware of. But even if you’re set in your ways, you’ll find it hard not to enjoy the music of The King Blues.
