Album Review - volcano!: Paperwork
The Leaf Label

by Ian Sinclair, first published in LondonTourdates #031 ,19th September 2008

“You just came to shoot your load off the stage,” humorously croons frontman Aaron With on single ‘Africa Just Wants To Have Fun’, the piss-taking centrepiece of Paperwork, volcano!’s second album.

Starting off with a slow ‘Hotel California’-style guitar chord progression, this six-minute slice of sonic insanity breaks out into an incredibly catchy vocal that needles Christ-like musicians/saviours who profess to save the world, before morphing again in to a soulful, drum-heavy work out.

Although the leftfield Chicago-based trio never quite top the sheer energy and experimentalism of ‘Africa Just Wants To Have Fun’, by combining free jazz, noise rock, post-punk, electronica and any other musical genre you care to think of, they have created a dynamic record. Constantly threatening to break down completely, the driving ‘Performance Evaluation Shuffle’ is particularly effective as is the edgy ‘Tension Loop’. Sometimes unlistenable, often infuriating, but always challenging and interesting.
