The Donkeys are a South California four-piece. They trade in the gentle harmonies, laid-back guitar and easy-going attitude that all reasonable musical stereotypes about that corner of the world demand.
Given this, they must be feeling robbed by the notable lack of summer weather here, as this album most assuredly cries out for warmth and sun. Softly paced guitar is fleshed out by touches of organ and piano, and mellow drums keep things ticking over.
Not a source for lyrics to blow your mind, but the harmonies are good and close without Magic Numbers-style twee sneaking in. It won’t demand an attentive listening party to gain the most from it, but there are flashes of real emotion, notably on the gorgeous ‘Dolphin Center’. Against the grain of the other songs, it cribs a little of Cat Power to very pleasing effect.
Otherwise, don’t overthink it, and you’ll be a happy convert to music that won’t take being the soundtrack to a good barbecue as an insult.
