Album Review - Jon Redfern: What Else But Love?
Reveal

by Ian Sinclair, first published in LondonTourdates #031 ,19th September 2008

With just one full-length album under his belt, Brighton-born singer-songwriter Jon Redfern has a long musical career ahead of him, and while What Else But Love? is a good building block, ultimately it is a slightly deflating, often forgettable record. There are flashes of brilliance certainly.

Memorable opener ‘Spark in The Sky’ is a maudlin and grandiose song tired of life and living. Single ‘Play on Fear’ picks up the pace a little - a gorgeous summer tune in the Josh Rouse mould, its upbeat sound masking darker lyrical concerns about watching your friends slowly wasting away.

Although Redfern has written an emotive, professionally produced album, his melodies and harmonies never quite hit the mark, with many songs, such as the harmonica-inflected ‘Future Lies’, performed at a frustratingly slow pace.

What Else But Love? is a pleasant enough listen, but its bland MOR will probably be a little too easy on the ear for many, I suspect.
