Album Review - Jaguar Love: Take Me To The Sea
Matador

by Richard Davie, first published in LondonTourdates #031 ,19th September 2008

Full disclosure: despite having known of both Blood Brothers and Pretty Girls Make Graves, I couldn’t give a toss about either of them.

Never did, probably never will. Given how devoted both bands’ fanbases were, I will assume they’ve already got this new band (comprised of members from each) tattooed somewhere on their person, and my review will be irrelevant to them. For everyone else, lead singer Johnny Whitney has a distinctive voice. He may well be one of the castrati, a papal favourite of years gone by, his voice is so high and ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’ squeaky. Understandably, this is a love/hate thing, especially when attached to the clash of straight-faced emo, high 70s camp, pop instincts and proggy excursions the band conjure.

On ‘Bats Over The Pacific Ocean’, you have something really exhilarating. Most of the rest of the time, you wish the voice was in fact digitally manipulated, at least then you could ask the producer to dial it down for the follow-up.
