Black Bikini Alpha are a London-based duo letting rip with a rather retro take on up-tempo punk-rock. They have been championed by BBC Radio 6 and supported Fun Lovin’ Criminals and Feeder, but the most interesting thing about them is the fact they once w

How are you and what have you been up to recently?
We’re very busy but feeling good. We’ve been gigging around the country promoting the single release and doing loads of radio interviews.
What are the five albums that have most influenced you?
Grace – Jeff Buckley, War – U2, OK Computer – Radiohead, There’s Something Going On – Babybird, Absolution – Muse.
You grew up in London. What was that like for a budding musician?
London is great for a young musician as there are so many places to rehearse, record and gig. However, because Londoners are spoilt for choice with the number of gigs going on each night, you often end up playing to a room full of people with folded arms and a ‘come on impress me’ look on their faces.
What’s the best concert you have ever been to?
A secret gig in Islington by nineties grunge-punk band Mudhoney and pop-punk band, Mega City Four. I was a very young, impressionable lad and that night confirmed that music was what I wanted to do with my life.
If you could have been a musician in any era when would it be?
The eighties because music had so many highs and lows during this period it would have been a challenge to ride the storm.
What’s the best gig you have ever performed?
CBGB’s in New York, playing on the same stage as so many of our idols. A great story to tell our grandkids as CBGB’s will always be known as the venue that invented punk.
Is there any particular venue you would like to play?
The Red Rocks amphitheatre in Denver. It’s an amazing setting for a gig and U2’s legendary ‘Under A Blood Red Sky’ video was filmed there.
Have you ever played a show when everything has gone completely wrong?
We were playing a Camden pub and had managed to hassle an A&R scout to come down to the gig. The venue experienced a power cut half way through the first song and managed to get the lights back on but not the PA. We tried to salvage the night by playing acoustic songs on electric guitar but failed miserably. Needless to say the A&R scout left and we never heard from them again.
What books have you read and films have you seen recently?
I read I Was Doctor Mengele’s Assistant by an Auschwitz concentration camp prisoner who had the unenviable job of being the SS doctor’s assistant, who was the man responsible for many of the Nazi experiments.
If not a musician, what job would you have had in the real world?
Army.
Any burning ambitions?
I guess the real burning ambition for both of us is to finally be recognised for what we are doing right now. By way of recognition we don’t necessarily mean financially, although that would be nice. Everyone is known for something past or present. Our burning ambition is to be known for being Black Bikini Alpha - quite simple really!
