Live Review - Cornelius
Shepherds Bush Empire3 August 2008

by Richard Davie, first published in LondonTourdates #029 ,22nd August 2008

Cornelius, the Planet of the Apes-obsessed producer and pop-wonderkind, brought his astonishing live show to us courtesy of those good people at ATP.

Once he took to the stage, the audio and the visual were essentially inseparable. Every song was accompanied by, or an accompaniment to, backing visuals - from abstract graphics, to animations, to cut-and-paste and 1/100th-speed documentary meditations. Like the Flaming Lips, the fear that you were watching a slightly superfluous live accompaniment to some nice videos was dissipated by Cornelius’s sense of fun and his astonishing control of proceedings. An awestruck fan was brought up and shown the use of a theremin. An effects pad was proffered to the crowd to control his guitar noise. To start the encore, he popped up behind the soundboard, set up a webcam and then played a song on a beatbox controlled by the use of illuminated squares.

An entire evening was peppered with these little moments of charm that humanised some mind-bogglingly lovely images. The music was rather excellent, too.
