Live Review - Kitty, Daisy & Lewis
100 Club30 July 2008

by Richard Davie, first published in LondonTourdates #029 ,22nd August 2008

The album launch for Kitty, Daisy & Lewis took place in an atmosphere more akin to a sauna, courtesy of the 100 Club’s unspoilt charms extending to a disregard for such modern fripperies as ventilation. This didn’t hinder the band, who launched into an energetic set and clearly had no desire to stop for the 11 o’clock curfew.

Opening with the two sisters singing unaccompanied cheek-to-cheek, they moved onto ‘Mean Son Of A Gun’, which showcased their strengths and weaknesses in equal measures. Entirely serious about their music, and capable of delivery that belies their tender years, they easily dispel the notion that these are kids playing dress-up. At the same time, they’re still attempting to reproduce the magic of the Sun or Chess golden years, which is a tall order for anyone.

Some ska numbers with a guest trumpeter were a fine diversion from their rock ‘n’ roll/rhythm and blues blueprint, but left the door open on whether they were nostalgia tourists or righteous throwbacks. Either way, they’re a fine live proposition, and to hear this music liberated from the pathological humourlessness of archivists and the dead hand of Dad-rock is a fine thing.
