There’s always been a kind of grandiosity to the BJM. That’s part of their, and by ‘their’ I mean Anton Newcombe’s, appeal – namely, the whole channelling-holy-visions-from-the-ether-madman-in-the-wilderness shtick that pervades his work, which in turn permits his unrelenting defiance towards ‘the industry’ when ‘they’ inevitably fail to understand him.
JLKJ however feels exactly like the kind of cheap trick that one can imagine Newcombe accusing more commercial bands of pulling. It simply consists of two different versions of new track ‘Amazing Electronic Talking Cave’, two new versions of ‘Just Like Kicking Jesus’ from the recent My Bloody Underground as well as the opening track from that album ‘Bring Me The Head Of Paul McCartney On Heather Mills’ Wooden Peg’ tacked on for good measure. Talk about cheap.
The combined effect is initially a bit hypnotic, but one loses interest pretty quickly due to simple lack of variation. It’s hard not to feel a tad cheated.
